Imani Tabernacle celebrates Kwanza

Pastor L.J Petty has sent us these photos and description of Imani Tabernacle's recent Kwanza celebration:

Kwanza is an African American cultural celebration beginning on December 26 and ending January 2. It was first introduced in 1966 by Dr. Ron Karenga. It has African Swahili roots and means the giving of the first fruits. It is based on a set of seven principles called Nguza Saba. The seven values are inculcated on at a time over the seven day period. The seven principals are:

  • Umoja -- Unity

  • Ujima -- Collective Work & Responsibility

  • Ujamaa -- Cooperative Economics

  • Nia -- purpose

  • Kuumba -- Creativity

  • Imani -- Faith

On the last day there is a Karami or feast consisting primarily of African and African-American Soul Food. Kwanzaa connects African Americans with their African roots and aids in bringing about helaing and wholeness. It is a non-commercial, non-religious, cultural celebration which includes small gifts, preferably handmade.
